Hayden Hewes and The International UFO Bureau

UFO Researcher Hayden Cooper Hewes was born on Dec. 29, 1943, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He founded the International UFO Bureau in 1957 (IUFOB) while still a high school student.  

Hewes loved to write to famous people about UFOs including U.S. Presidents and Soviet Premier Nitika Khrushchev. That letter landed the high school student in hot water when FBI agents showed up at his house to interview him.

While Hewes had already made quite a name for himself, in 1974 his greatest achievements began when he met a mysterious couple calling themselves Bo & Peep. Peep’s real name was Bonnie Nettles and she died of cancer in 1985. Bo was Marshall Applewhite who ran a cult called Heaven’s Gate. They preached an extraterrestrial gospel. Hewes and paranormal author Brad Steiger eventually wrote a book on the cult called Inside Heaven’s Gate.

In 1997, Bo along with 38 other cult members took their lives in a mass suicide believing a UFO would take their souls to a higher dimension.

MUFON is grateful to Mindy Tautfest and Teri-Lynge-Kehl, former MUFON Directors, who left to resurrect The International UFO Bureau. They received Hewes’ files from his widow. Hewes died in 2017. The new IUFOB worked with MUFON & well-known podcaster Christopher Jordan of Curious Realm to digitize all of Hewes’ collection.
